The beginning
Oakley traces Eyeshade to 1984, when founder Jim Jannard wanted sunglasses with the coverage of the company’s MX goggles. Oakley says an early prototype combined a Lexan goggle lens with improvised materials before becoming Eyeshade.
Why it mattered
Rather than treating sunglasses as small fashion frames, Eyeshade used a broad shield and goggle-like coverage for sport. Oakley describes the 1984 Factory Pilot Eyeshade as its first sport-performance eyewear.
This YGW example
Our photographed example pairs the dramatic orange shield with a clear spare lens. The photography intentionally shows the actual piece and its visible condition rather than a catalogue-perfect substitute.
